Grammar Lesson 11

ให้นักเรียนศึกษาและทำความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับ  การเปรียบเทียบขั้นต่าง ๆ เพื่อมาลองทำแบบฝึกหัดกันนะคะ

Comparison

ปกติเราใช้คำคุณศัพท์ขยายคำนาม เช่น a tall man = คนสูง หรือ That man is tall. = ผู้ชายคนนั้นสูง  แต่เมื่อมีคน (หรือสิ่งของ หรืออะไรก็ได้) มากกว่าหนึ่งแล้วต้องการเปรียบเทียบคนเหล่านั้น เราจะทำได้หลายวิธี
เช่น
1. A is as tall as B. = คนหนึ่งสูงเท่ากับอีกคน
2. C is taller than A. = คนหนึ่งสูงกว่าอีกคน (เรียกว่า การเปรียบเทียบขั้นกว่า หรือ comparative)*
3. C is the tallest.

That car is smaller than my car. รถคันนั้นเล็กกว่ารถของฉัน

**การเปรียบเทียบขั้นสูงสุดนั้น มีหลักการที่ต้องท่องจำคือ "Person/object 1 + verb + the + คำที่เป็นขั้นสูงสุดคำว่า the เป็นคำที่แสดงถึงความเป็นที่สุด ไม่ใส่ไม่ได้ค่ะ
เช่น That car is the smallest car I've ever seen. รถคันนั้นขนาดเล็กที่สุดที่ฉันเคยเห็น
การทำคำ adjective ให้เป็นขั้นกว่าและขั้นสูงสุด Forming Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

- คำหนึ่งพยางค์ One-syllable adjectives
เติม -er สำหรับขั้นกว่า และเติม -est สำหรับขั้นสูงสุด
Form the comparative and superlative forms of a one-syllable adjective by adding –er for the comparative form and –est for the superlative.

เช่น
tall --> taller --> tallest สูง
old --> older --> oldest เก่า, แก่
long --> longer --> longest ยาว

ตัวอย่าง
  • Mary is taller than Max. แมรี่สูงกว่าแม็กซ์
  • Mary is the tallest of all the students. แมรี่สูงที่สุดในหมู่นักเรียนทั้งหมด
  • Max is older than John. แม็กซ์แก่กว่าจอห์น
  • Of the three students, Max is the oldest. ในนักเรียนสามคนนั้นแม็กซ์แก่ที่สุด
  • My hair is longer than your hair. ผมฉันยาวกว่าผมเธอ
  • Max's story is the longest story I've ever heard. เรื่องเล่าของแม็กซ์นั้นยาวที่สุดเท่าที่ฉันเคยได้ยินมา
ถ้าคำ adjective หนึ่งพยางค์นั้นลงท้ายด้วย e เวลาเติมขั้นกว่าก็เติม -r เข้าไปได้เลย ส่วนถ้าเป็นขั้นสูงสุดก็เติม -st ได้เลย
If the one-syllable adjective ends with an e, just add –r for the comparative form and –st for the superlative form.

เช่น
large --> larger --> largest ใหญ่
wise --> wiser --> wisest ฉลาด
  • Mary's car is larger than Max's car. รถของแมรี่ใหญ่กว่ารถของแม็กซ์
  • Mary's house is the tallest of all the houses on the block. บ้านของแมรี้สูงที่สุดในบ้านละแวกนี้
  • Max is wiser than his brother. แม็กซ์ฉลาดกว่าน้องของเขา
  • Max is the wisest person I know. แม็กซ์เป็นคนที่ฉลาดที่สุดที่ฉันรู้จัก
ถ้าคำหนึ่งพยางค์นั้นลงท้ายด้วยพยัญชนะตัวเดียว และหน้าพยัญชนะนั้นเป็นสระ ต้องเบิ้ลพยัญชนะลงท้ายนั้นอีกตัวแล้วจึงเติม -er (ขั้นกว่า) หรือ -est (ขั้นสูงสุด)
If the one-syllable adjective ends with a single consonant with a vowel before it, double the consonant and add –er for the comparative form; and double the consonant and add –est for the superlative form.

เช่น
big --> bigger --> biggest ใหญ่
thin --> thinner --> thinnest ผอม
fat --> fatter --> fattest อ้วน
  • My dog is bigger than your dog. สุนัขของฉันตัวใหญ่กว่าสุนัขของคุณ
  • My dog is the biggest of all the dogs in the neighborhood. สุนัขของฉันตัวใหญ่ที่สุดในละแวกนี้
  • Max is thinner than John. แม็กซ์ผอมกว่าจอห์น
  • Of all the students in the class, Max is the thinnest. ในหมู่นักเรียนในห้อง แม็กซ์ผอมที่สุด
  • My mother is fatter than your mother. แม่ฉันอ้วนกว่าแม่เธอ
  • Mary is the fattest person I've ever seen. แมรี้เป็นคนที่อ้วนที่สุดที่ฉันเคยเจอ
คำ adjective สองพยางค์ Two-syllable adjectives

คำ adjective สองพยางค์ส่วนใหญ่ทำให้เป็นขั้นกว่าด้วยการเติมคำว่า more ข้างหน้า  และทำให้เป็นขั้นสูงสุดด้วยการเติมคำว่า most
With most two-syllable adjectives, you form the comparative with more and the superlative with most.

เช่น
peaceful --> more peaceful --> most peaceful สงบ
pleasant --> more pleasant --> most pleasant น่าพอใจ เพลิดเพลิน
careful --> more careful --> most careful ระมัดระวัง
thoughtful --> more thoughtful --> most thoughtful เห็นอกเห็นใจ
  • This morning is more peaceful than yesterday morning. เช้าวันนี้สงบกว่าเช้าเมื่อวาน
  • Max's house in the mountains is the most peaceful in the world. บ้านบนเขาของแม็กซ์เป็นที่ที่สงบที่สุดในโลก
  • Max is more careful than Mike. แม็กซ์ระมัดระวังมากกว่าไม้ค์
  • Of all the taxi drivers, Jack is the most careful. ในคนขับแท็กซี่ที่หมด แจ๊คระมัดระวังมากที่สุด
  • Jill is more thoughtful than your sister. จิลเห็นอกเห็นใจคนอื่นมากกว่าพี่ของเธอ
  • Mary is the most thoughtful person I've ever met. แมรี่เป็นคนที่เห็นอกเห็นใจคนอื่นมากที่สุดที่ฉันเคยเจอ
ถ้าคำ adjective สองพยางค์นั้นลงท้ายด้วย y ต้องเปลี่ยน y เป็น i แล้วจึงค่อยเติม -er หรือ -est นะคะ
If the two-syllable adjectives ends with –y, change the y to i and add –er for the comparative form. For the superlative form change the y to i and add –est.

เช่น
happy --> happier --> happiest มีความสุข
angry --> angrier --> angriest โกรธ
busy --> busier --> busiest ยุ่ง
  • John is happier today than he was yesterday. วันนี้จอห์นมีความสุขมากกว่าเมื่อวาน
  • John is the happiest boy in the world. จอห์นเป็นเด็กที่มีความสุขที่สุดในโลก
  • Max is angrier than Mary. แม็กซ์โกรธมากกว่าแมรี่
  • Of all of John's victims, Max is the angriest. ในคนที่ตกเป็นเหยื่อของจอห์นนั้น แม็กซ์โกรธที่สุด
  • Mary is busier than Max. แมรี่ยุ่งกว่าแม็กซ์
  • Mary is the busiest person I've ever met. แมรี่เป็นคนที่ยุ่งที่สุดที่ฉันเคยเจอ
ถ้าคำสองพยางค์นั้นลงท้ายด้วย -er, -le, หรือ -ow ให้ใช้การเติม -er ต่อท้ายคำ (แทนที่จะเติม more ข้างหน้า) สำหรับขั้นกว่า  และให้เติม -est ต่อท้ายคำ (แทนที่จะเติม most ข้างหน้า)
Two-syllable adjectives ending in –er, -le, or –ow take –er and –est to form the comparative and superlative forms.

เช่น
narrow --> narrower --> narrowest แคบ
gentle --> gentler --> gentlest นุ่มนวล
  • The roads in this town are narrower than the roads in the city. ถนนในเมืองนี้แคบกว่าถนนในเมืองใหญ่
  • This road is the narrowest of all the roads in California. ถนนนี้แคบที่สุดในถนนในแคลิฟอร์เนีย
  • Big dogs are gentler than small dogs. สุนัขตัวใหญ่นั้นนุ่มนวลกว่าสุนัขตัวเล็ก
  • Of all the dogs in the world, English Mastiffs are the gentlest. ในจำนวนสุนัขทั้งหมดในโลก สุนัขพันธุ์แมสทิฟนุ่มนวลที่สุด
คำ adjective ที่มีสามพยางค์ขึ้นไป Adjectives with three or more syllables
ใช้ more + adjective สำหรับขั้นกว่า และ the most + adjective สำหรับขั้นสูงสุด
For adjectives with three syllables or more, you form the comparative with more and the superlative with most.

เช่น
generous --> more generous --> most generous ใจกว้าง
important --> more important --> most important สำคัญ
intelligent --> more intelligent --> most intelligent ฉลาด
  • John is more generous than Jack. จอห์นใจกว้างกว่าแจ๊ค
  • John is the most generous of all the people I know. จอห์นเป็นคนใจกว้างที่สุดในคนที่ฉันรู้จัก
  • Health is more important than money. สุขภาพสำคัญกว่าเงิน
  • Of all the people I know, Max is the most important. ในทุกคนที่ฉันรู้จัก แม็กซ์สำคัญที่สุด
  • Women are more intelligent than men. ผู้หญิงฉลาดกว่าผู้ชาย
  • Mary is the most intelligent person I've ever met. แมรี่เป็นคนที่ฉลาดที่สุดที่ฉันเคยเจอ
ข้อยกเว้น Exceptions
คำ adjective ที่ไม่เปลี่ยนรูปตามกฏข้างต้น Irregular adjectives.

good --> better --> best ดี
bad --> worse --> worst แย่
far --> farther/further --> farthest/furthest ไกล
little --> less --> least น้อย
many --> more --> most มาก
  • Italian food is better than American food. อาหารอิตาเลี่ยนดี (อร่อย) กว่าอาหารอเมริกัน
  • My dog is the best dog in the world. สุนัขของฉันเป็นสุนัขที่ดี (น่ารัก) ที่สุดในโลก
  • My mother's cooking is worse than your mother's cooking. อาหารที่แม่ฉันทำแย่กว่าที่แม่เธอทำ
  • Of all the students in the class, Max is the worst. ในนักเรียนทั้งหมดในห้อง แม็กซ์แย่ที่สุด
คำ adjective สองพยางค์ที่ใช้ได้ทั้งสองกฏ คือเติม -er/-est ต่อท้าย หรือเติม more/most ข้างหลังก็ได้ Two-syllable adjectives that follow two rules. These adjectives can be used with -er and -est and with more and most.

clever --> cleverer --> cleverest ฉลาด
clever --> more clever --> most clever
gentle --> gentler --> gentlest
gentle --> more gentle --> most gentle
friendly --> friendlier --> friendliest เป็นมิตร
friendly --> more friendly --> most friendly
quiet --> quieter --> quietest เงียบ
quiet --> more quiet --> most quiet
simple --> simpler --> simplest ง่าย ไม่ซับซ้อน
simple --> more simple --> most simple
  • Big dogs are gentler than small dogs.
  • Of all the dogs in the world, English Mastiffs are the gentlest.
  • Big dogs are more gentle than small dogs.
  • Of all the dogs in the world, English Mastiffs are the most gentle.
กฏสำคัญอื่นๆ ในการทำให้เป็นขั้นกว่ากับขั้นสูงสุด Important points about comparatives and superlatives
แหล่งที่มา: http://www.eslbase.com/grammar/comparative-superlative

1. ไม่ใช้ the ในขั้นสูงสุด ถ้าข้างหน้าเป็นคำแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ
We do not use the with the superlative if there is a possessive.

เช่น His strongest point is his ambition. คุณสมบัติที่ดีที่สุดของเขาคือความทะเยอทะยาน

2. ถ้าจะบอกว่าเท่ากัน ให้ใช้รูป as + adjective + as
We use as + adjective + as to say that two things are equal in some way.

เช่น
He's as tall as me. เขาสูงเท่ากับฉัน
Jim's car is as fast as mine. รถของจิมเร็วเท่ากับของฉัน

3. วิธีบอกว่าไม่เท่ากัน ให้ใช้ not as + adjective
We use not as to say that two things are not equal in some way.

เช่น
He's not as tall as me. เขาสูงไม่เท่ากับฉัน (มักจะแปลว่าฉันสูงกว่า)
Jim's car is not as fast as mine. รถของจิมเร็วไม่เท่ากับของฉัน

4. วิธีขยายให้การเปรียบเทียบชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น ทำได้โดยใส่คำ much (มาก), a lot (มาก), far (มาก), a little (นิดหน่อย), a bit (นิดหน่อย), slightly (นิดหน่อย) ข้างหน้าคำเปรียบ
We can modify comparatives with much, a lot, far, a little, a bit, slightly.

Bob is much richer than I am. บ๊อบรวยกว่าฉันมาก
My mother's hair is slightly longer than mine. ผมของแม่ฉันยาวกว่าผมฉันนิดหน่อย

5.สำหรับขั้นสูงสุด ใช้คำขยายความต่อไปนี้ by far (อย่างแน่นอน), easily (อย่างไม่ต้องสงสัย), nearly (เกือบ)
We can modify superlative with by far, easily and nearly.

เช่น
Mario's is by far the best restaurant in town. ร้านมาริโอ้เป็นร้านอาหารที่ดีที่สุดอย่างแน่นอน
I'm nearly the oldest in the class. ฉันเกือบแก่ที่สุดในห้อง

6. ปกติเวลาเปรียบเทียบขั้นกว่า เราจะใส่ than + คนอีกคนหรือของอีกชิ้น สำหรับขั้นกว่า และใส่คำพวก in the class, in the world, of all students ฯลฯ สำหรับขั้นสูงสุด แต่ถ้าบริบทชัดเจนอยู่แล้ว ไม่ต้องใส่ก็ได้
If the second part of a comparative or superlative sentence is clear from what comes before or from the context, we can omit it.

เช่น
Going by bus is very fast, but the train is more comfortable. นั่งรถโดยสารไปนั้นเร็ว แต่นั่งรถไฟสบายกว่า

7. เราสามารถพูดคำที่แสดงขั้นกว่าซ้ำในประโยคเดียวกันได้ เพื่อบอกถึงความเปลี่ยนแปลง
We can repeat comparatives to say that something is changing.

เช่น
These exams are getting worse and worse every year. ข้อสอบพวกนี้แย่ลงแย่ลงทุกปี
She gets more and more beautiful every time I see her.

We can use "less" instead of "more" in comparative sentences.

เช่น
Ms. Wilson is less creative Ms. Gibbs. มิสวิลสันมีความคิดสร้างสรรค์น้อยกว่ามิสกิ๊บส์
The students seemed less active in class this week. สัปดาห์นี้นักเรียนดูกระฉับกระเฉงน้อยลง

9. การเปรียบเทียบขั้นกว่าและขั้นสูงสุด นอกจากใช้กับ adjectives แล้ว ยังใช้กับ adverbs ได้ด้วย โดยใช้หลักการเดียวกันในการเปลี่ยนคำให้เป็นขั้นกว่าและขั้นสูงสุด
We can also use comparatives and superlatives with adverbs.

เช่น
Tom solved that puzzle as easily as Liam (did). ทอมแก้ปริศนานั้นได้อย่างง่ายดายพอๆกับเลียม
Ken does his homework more quickly than Sue (does). เค็นทำการบ้านเร็วกว่าซู
